According to Wikipedia it is "never acceptable" to use more than three period marks in an ellipses.
On the topic of punctuation, when punctuating a sentence that is both a question and an exclamation, how you punctuate depends on the sentence. If the sentence is primarily a question, then it's ?!, if it's just rhetorics or whatever, then it's !?, and if all else fails you can always use an interrobang.

Good one. Educational too. I wonder if it's okay to have trailing ellipsis that doesn't lead to a related thought...
MatthewJA MatthewJA 1st Oct 2010, 3:44 AM
@Robotwin I'm sure it's fine. It's called aposiopesis apparently.
Wait... I see what you did there.

I love ellipses... i love them so much i use them all the time=)... a friend of mine thinks it looks emo...
Cameobug Cameobug 23rd Oct 2010, 4:39 AM
Actually, if you are ending a sentence with an ellipsis, you are supposed to use 4 period marks (AKA, ellipsis + a period). Foolish, foolish Wikipedia....
MatthewJA MatthewJA 23rd Oct 2010, 8:53 AM
No way!
00Davo 00Davo 25th Oct 2010, 10:54 AM
Actually, none of you have used ellipses. You've just used three periods in succession, "...". An ellipsis is an actual character entity, "…".

Of course, on a non-monospaced font the difference isn't going to be too visible anyway. Nonetheless, beware the CHARACTER ENCODING NAZI!

@Cameobug: Yep, correct (except for the part where an ellipsis is != three periods). If the sentence ends with an ellipsis, it still needs to be closed with a period normally….

On topic of the actual comic, punctuation metahumour is fun!

Macintosh Mail app and Text Edit change 3 periods to a single character. Indeed that commentator is correct! Bare their buttocks and give them 40 swats with a ping-pong paddle in celebration!
MatthewJA MatthewJA 25th Oct 2010, 11:11 AM
To be fair, I am grammatically correct in terms of not putting a period at the end of my ellipse because it isn't an ellipse it's three periods.
Incidentally, in my comic, in my font, three periods looks the same as an ellipse. And here you are putting four periods at the end of a sentence, too, you socially unacceptable fool! :D
00Davo 00Davo 25th Oct 2010, 11:55 AM
I'm not putting four periods on the end of my sentences; I'm putting one ellipsis and one period….

PROTIP: To check whether someone is being awesome and using the ellipsis entity, or just using periods which is uncool, try selecting the ellipsis/periods. An ellipsis will select all in one go, while the periods may be selected individually.

Oh, and to actually get the ellipsis entity, I'm using Alt-numpad codes. Specifically, Alt-0133. I have it memorised.

Hey, I use that, too, except on my Wii.
Not only do I have the ALT code for … memorized, but é as well.
On the Wii, I can just select the é from a list,
but Nintendo didn't include … in their special character selection,
but they did include it in their font.
At least, in the North American versions.
MatthewJA MatthewJA 25th Oct 2010, 1:09 PM
yeah, but the spacing's identical in this font
MatthewJA MatthewJA 25th Oct 2010, 1:15 PM
non-monospaced for this reason

For reference, a combination of an exclamation mark and a question mark is called an interrobang. It's a neat little character. ;)
I use ?!? if it's more a question, and !?! if it's more an exclamation. :)
MatthewJA MatthewJA 5th Nov 2010, 8:04 AM
My goodness! I actually knew that!
I use !? for an exclamation question and ?! for a question that is also an exclamation. Well!? Do you?!

On occasion. ;)
Magravan Magravan 5th Dec 2010, 8:04 AM
Screw wikipedia ;) I use additional periods to exaggerate pauses ;)
MatthewJA MatthewJA 5th Dec 2010, 8:09 AM
Heh, wish I'd thought of saying that to 00Davo.

Know what's so great about having a super-popular webcomic?

...A lot of people leave random comments on random comics throughout the archives. :P
MatthewJA MatthewJA 17th Dec 2010, 9:46 AM
People like you.
ranger_brianna_new ranger_brianna_new , 75% of global word usage 18th Dec 2010, 5:43 AM
Yeah, hence the comment. :P
But, really, I've noticed it a lot from other people. If nobody else did it, I admittedly probably wouldn't, 'cause I'd feel kinda awkward posting a comment on months-old comics, when on most comics, the author probably wouldn't notice, and among those who do, most would 1: be minorly annoyed, and/or 2: ignore it.
(Fortunately, you're not that type. :P)
Ivan Ivan 14th May 2013, 5:28 AM

You get over it. :-D
